Speed Road Bike
What is an equivalent speed bike from the Mountain Bike on the pavement and road bike so high on the pavement?

I ride mountain bike about 10 miles each day in the streets around my house and usually average 15-16 miles per hour. I know tires add a lot of drag, so I was wondering what would be my speed on a road bike that had less resistance. I'm considering getting a bike good road, but I'm not interested in aero-bars or other towed gear.

This is a very good question. I think the answer depends on several factors. With regard to drag, road tires will allow you to roll faster. However, not all mountain bike tires are equal. In fact, some knobbies with a central segment real good roll smoothly on the pavement. In addition, some knobbies create drag horrible. Therefore, the gain of tires only depends on what is currently running on your mountain bike. A road bike will allow you to achieve a more aerodynamic position in the bar drops. How willing and able you are to get a facelift in your road bike affect your speed on everything. A road bike of course, has no suspension so you do not have energy loss due to shake. Of course, if you lock the suspension, while on the road this will not make any difference. A road bike is almost certainly weigh less than a mountain bike so you get a win there, especially if your Travel is rough. A big win, however, will come from the lighter wheels and tires of the road bike. As energy needs, a gram rotating mass is much heavier than a gram non-rotating. Therefore, the reduced rotational mass allows you to go faster and accelerate the fastest bike. Therefore, ultimately, the big difference can be expected? Weight, aerodynamics, and reduced rotating mass I think you can expect to collect 3.2 miles from hour. Depending on other factors that may be able to pick up even more. Hope this helps and I hope you have a lot of fun finding the answer to your question. Good luck to you.

Fixed Gear Single
Fixed Gear help please?

I have an old Schwinn road bike. I want to get all the arts and to fixed gear. No one freewheel speed. Fixed gear. I'll be able to do fixed gear without a new rear wheel. What I need. Thanks for ur help

If the old road bike has a set of gears that can be removed and fixed gear tooth screwed into place. That will give you a fixed rate. Obviously, you must remove the deraillers and shorten the chain. The bike will need to have adjustable back legs. If they are vertical you can forget that idea completely. The bad news is that a middle of the road does not have a lock ring keep the tooth in place as a center of the track. If you place a lot of back pressure on the pedals, such as when stopped or instead of using the brakes, the wheel could unscrew. You can actually play the horn of the existence of red Loctite and most likely never reverse, but can not eliminate or change the proportions. If you are careful this works, but not ideal. If the wheel is pulled back in the thread that could leave the drive chain flopping around near the rays – Not a good situation.

Track Bike

Mountain biking in the Portes du Soleil

Have you ever actually ridden your Mountain Bike down a mountain? If most of your riding takes place in the UK, then the answer to this is probably “no”. However, this sport is called “mountain biking” for a reason. If you sit at the top of a mountain peak in the French Alps, looking across towards jagged snow capped Dents du Midi mountains, with a long descent of twisty technical single track ahead of you; suddenly it all starts to make sense.

The Portes du Soleil region, in the northern French Alps, has become a Mecca for mountain biking and not without good reason. Over the winter months the area is famous for being the largest linked ski area in the world, but during the summer months it is fast becoming recognised as the largest lift served mountain bike trail area in the world.

The area offers something to suit all styles and levels of mountain biking. For cross country riders, there are plenty of demanding climbs to challenge your fitness. For downhill riders, there are a huge number of dedicated downhill tracks ranging from easy to insane. For freeriders, the area really comes into its own with mile after mile of varied terrain including technical forest single track, bike parks, exposed steep faces and north shore style zones.

In response to the growing demand from mountain bikers from all disciplines, many of the resorts in the area have invested heavily in mountain bike infrastructure.

In Switzerland, the resorts of Champéry;, Val d’Illiez-Les Crosets-Champoussin & Morgins boast a four cross track, a north shore zone, a bike park, 3 downhill courses (including the infamous UCI world cup downhill course, and the UCI 15 km cross country loop.

In Les Gets over in the French side, there is a beginners’ downhill track at the Grand Cry Park and 2 beginners’ MTB parks; the Kid’Zone and Mini Jump Park. For the more experienced there is a dirt and freestyle jump park, a four cross track, a freeride zone in “Gibannaz Canyon”, 4 downhill courses, and 6 cross-country suitable for all riders.

Chatel, which is right at the centre of the area, has perhaps the biggest selection of purpose built MTB areas with 15 MTB tracks (14 of which are downhill profiled), 5 north shore zones, 1 four cross track, the infamous freeride “La Face” mountain style zone, 1 kid’s cross and a drop zone with jump pit, wall ride, quarter, step-ups and step-downs.

Despite having great trails for intermediate, advanced and crazy riders, the Portes du Soleil area is also a fantastic place to learn mountain biking, or to go riding with young families. There are plenty of places where you can get chairlifts up to the tops of the mountains, and then find your way around easy tracks which don’t tend to be too steep or challenging.

One of the reasons why the Portes du Soleil has become so popular for mountain biking is because the sheer vastness of the area results an incredible mix of varied terrain, and ensures that the trails never become too busy. Indeed, it is possible to ride all day and see no other riders. Couple this with beautiful alpine resorts, great value accommodation and the glorious back drop of the Dents du Midi mountains and the Mont Blanc range, and it is clear to see why the Portes du Soleil is one of the best mountain biking destinations in the world.

About the Author

White-Peak Holidays offers a number of summer mountain bike holidays in the Portes du Soleil, and winter ski holidays in Chatel.

Track Bike Fixed
Buying a Fixed Gear Bike track … What do you think is better and why?

The two in question are: Tommaso Augusta D & D Blue Steel Track Bike (http://www.giantnerd.com/tommaso-augusta-dd-blue-steel-track-bike-limited-edition.html) or Motobecane track (http://www.bikesdirect. com / products / motobecane / track.htm) No one word answers … I love to hear from some fellow bicycle enthusiasts. Thanks!

I bike over 40 miles a week in the city. I use a 1983 Schwinn Traveler into a fixed gear. One of my friends just bought the D & D Tommaso Blue Steel track bike. He moves well. It looks good too. Make sure you get a front wheel brake. A fixed-gear riding is great because it receives control and the benefits of exercise. The bikes-accessories was not invented for Velodromes tracks. It was the original design of the bike in early 1800. It was the arrival of the Germans and the French freewheel derailleur that occurred in the early 1800's that created the bikes we see today with the gears and wheels free.
